Schools and Universities, both public and private, operate in similar ways to other types of organisations. They have cultural issues, leadership issues and financial issues. We have developed a specific values template for schools and universities that takes account of these issues. For example, on the school template, instead of words like customer satisfaction, we use parent or pupil satisfaction. We also introduce phrases like parent involvement or parent interference. School surveys can involve faculty, administrative staff, parents and senior pupils. We have carried out values assessments for schools in five different countries. A special training course is available for teachers. We have carried out University Surveys in the UK, USA, Norway, The Netherlands and Australia.
We have also developed a template for classrooms that can be used by children from ages 5 – 12. Instead of values, the template uses descriptive phrases that children can understand. The personal values template is the same as the classroom template and contains approximately 50 phrases rather than the 80 – 100 we use for surveys of public or private sector institutions. The survey is useful in identifying classroom issues and teaching children about how to discuss and negotiate with each other around values.
